Hone conducted his own defense and argued successfully that he never intended to “excite ridicule against the Christian religion… [his] intention was merely political.” In this address Hone states that he followed a legally accepted tradition of using parodies of scripture or the sacred text in order to legitimately attack what he considered to be a corrupt government.
